These sweet plush toys are hand-knit in Nakuru, Kenya by the amazing team at Kenana Knitters! Made using local, organic, natural wool and cotton fibers, as well as both AZO-free dyes and natural plant dyes from plants grown in the area, each toy is truly special.

Kenana Knitters began as a way to help the local farming community in Nakuru, Kenya make use of (and income from) wool that would otherwise be discarded or burned.
By first bringing the wool to market in Nairobi in the form of yarn, and eventually developing the idea of toys (the first of which was the zebra :), Kenana has created an ecosystem that is truly sustainable.
Spinning is done by the local community in Nakuru, typically on handmade spinning wheels made out of old bicycle wheels. Dyes are made from local plants and vegetables, for example, the stegasaurus was made with plumbago leaves, the bunnies, bears, giraffes and lions with plectranthus leaves, and the orange on the giraffe was achieved with dahlia flowers. Each of these animals is so special, and we hope you'll find someone special to share them with!

These are a sweet addition to the other fabric animals - they are soft and squishy and have a vintage timeless look to them. I love that the tag on each tells the story of its creation and even has the handwritten name of the person that made it. I ended up purchasing the small dragon in commemoration of the Year of the Dragon 2024.
The SF Fillmore store just had a small assortment of the collection available. I may come back to purchase the lion and octopus online - they’re too adorable!

Adorable! Well-made. Lots of character. I'm not usually drawn to stuffed animals, but I was immediately charmed by the craft and character and uniqueness of each of these stuffed animals. I bought two of them for myself--the lion and the octopus. I may find a child to give them to one day, but meanwhile I am delighted to have them in my home. They make me smile.

I’m so happy with the octopus I ordered. Not only is it adorable and baby safe, it was made by knitters in Kenya and had a sweet message about that. It was even signed by the knitter. Great gift for my little niece!
